Reviews: "Performance poet, Brendan Hickey, opens his "Vergions" album with "UFObia", a chilling spoken piece above swirling synth noises that could well herald the apocalypse. There are echoes of Paul Durcan in Hickey's clipped and measured delivery, and the production by Karl Odlum works a treat. A welcome break from the predictability of much that passes for cutting edge rock" Jackie Hayden's "First Cuts" Pick of the Fortnight Hot Press 14/1/10
About The Event: Brendan Hickey, is a man who is most likely to be known as the driving force behind “On The Verge”, which for the last fifteen years has promoted original music through the “On The Verge Live” radio show (Dublin South FM), a popular website www.ontheverge.ie and showcase gigs. Brendan is the guy who came across the raw talents of artists like Paddy Casey, Mundy, Damien Dempsey, Gemma Hayes and Declan O’Rourke (to name but a few) and was the first to put them on air. The radio show still continues to give musicians with original material the chance to have their work broadcast, and to perform live at Dublin South FM. Nowadays the acts are not just local, however, but international as well. What may not be so well known is that Brendan is also a performance poet who has been writing since the late sixties and who has been giving performances of his own work for over thirty years. Music has always been important to him and late night sessions with Phil Lynott and later Shane McGowan gave him the encouragement to put his work into print. Two self-published books “Beside Myself” and “On The Verge” both sold out through sales at gigs and distribution by Easons. Music has always been important to him and while sifting through his writings with the intention of putting out a new collection, Brendan was urged by Karl Odlum, an old friend and collaborator, to work on a cd. Karl produced Brendan’s limited edition EP “Autumn Blues”, which sold out after performances at The High Teas café in the Electric Picnic ’08. This not only helped finance the latter stages of his debut album “Vergions” but also convinced Brendan that there was an audience for his work. Since achieving Hot Press “Pick of the Fortnight” status and local and national airplay, for the album, Brendan and his Launch Crew have played The Lower Deck, Portobello Harbour, The D.C.C, Camden Row, Anseo, Camden St, The Ruby Sessions at Doyle’s, College St. and Whelan’s of Wexford St. He has also been a special guest at The Glor sessions, and for three different acts at Whelan’s,

About The Event: Peter Doran is a 26 year old Irish Indie-folk singer and songwriter. His music and sound has been warmly compared to artists such as Nick Drake, Damien Rice and Paul Simon. At a very young age Peter happened upon the electric guitar and instantly fell in love. The feel, the sound, the look, the lot. For many years he practised tirelessly, determined to play very very fast. Over time he mellowed, and became less and less interested in the speed of the notes, but in their character instead. This he decided was where the magic lay. 2006 saw the release of Peter’s first album “Wood”, which was described as “Warm and enchanting, a debut that should open doors and minds” by leading Irish Music publication Hotpress. Fast forward to 2010 and Peter is on the verge of releasing his second album “Sleepless Street”; an album that’s taken the guts of two years to record. Beginning life in small bedroom studios and working it’s way through world famous facilities such as Grouse Lodge in Ireland (Michael Jackson, Snow Patrol, Muse etc) and Abbey Road in London (Beatles, Pink Floyd). "Sleepless Street" is released digitally July 23rd 2010, with a physical release and Irish tour in September.

Reviews: “The announcement of this release date is great news for true music lovers – NOBODY KNOWS is simply a pleasure to listen to with its perfectly eclectic blend of influences”‐ Patrick James Blog Sept 23rd sees one of Ireland’s most regular touring troubadours ‐ELDER ROCHE‐ release his amazing album NOBODY KNOWS, after a windfall of press and radio support over the last few months after his single release ‐DIAMOND‐ which lead to sold out shows in Dublin. The Irish Independent & HOTPRESS gave him their seal of approval stating that “Ireland has a new singer songwriter to be reckoned with!”, while MIXTAPE/ 2UIBESTOW awarded ELDER ROCHE as their RUBY TUESDAY ARTIST “Elder Roche has shown massive potential with his debut album 'Nobody Knows'. You can't but hear Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen influences, but this is a fine true folk troubadour”. Having The News of The World declare that his “manly vocals and powerful storytelling songs bring to mind the genius of Leonard Cohen and Neil Diamond.” Dan Hegarty of RTE 2FM claims that there is “something spiritual about ELDER’s songs”, and PHANTOM FM describes him as “truly talented and stunning”. Radio stations nationwide (BEAT FM, WLRFM, KFM, KCLRFM, CLARE FM, WIRED FM, FEILE FM, MIDLANDS RADIO + more) have been adding ELDER ROCHE to their programmes play lists, echoing a great year to come from this musical dramatist who is now ready to be recognised and embraced for his musical ability. ‘It is said that those born under the Elder sign are able to live and prosper under any conditions’.
About The Event: Experimenting with music from the early age of eleven, this Dublin based musical poet has shared the stage with many of Ireland’s well known’s over the years‐ Paddy Casey, Damien Rice, Juno Falls, Juliet Turner and Damian Dempsey. He is no stranger to the press or radio as the past few years have seen ELDER grow and establish himself as an entertaining and riveting performer‐ not to mention a solemn musician who remains true to the very elements that preserves the original with the new. He has played in venues across the world (America and Europe) and indeed in Ireland. Embracing the grittier side of life and paving the way with slapping grooves and roots overtones. ELDER’s theatrical story telling has likened him to Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and David Bowie. (Who can argue with them comparisons). His fantastic eagerly awaited studio album NOBODY KNOWS contains catchy progressions and is every bit the way to go in etching his own space within the songs that fuse the current music scene both in Ireland and further afield. Dub Country: 08th October 2010
Musical Style: Country/Rock

Days of Week: Friday
About The Event: Dub Country is a tale of a meeting of melodic minds and the ensuing mayhem. It’s what happens when four Dublin-based musicians merge in a multiple vehicle pile-up on the M50, and emerge with tales of loss, destruction and ultimately, redemption. Consisting of Aisling Kavanagh (contemporary country singer/songwriter), Dave Conway (ex-Trip Hazard, The DC Experiment), Robbie Stanley (ex-Trip Hazard, Grades of Shade) and Jean Phi Morer (The DC Experiment) this is more than a side-project and has a wholesome life of its own. Their debut gig in The Village in Dublin’s fair city in November of 2009 enthralled the audience, leaving melodies on repeat in their heads, and happiness in their hearts. Neither pure country, nor pure rock, nor standard country-rock, their performance created a new space somewhere in between. With alternating lead and backing vocals, and scatological banter in between, the live show presented something unique and unexpected; an original band playing songs that you felt you already knew, in the comfort of your own home! Perhaps the presence of a table lamp and ironing board on stage gave the sense of domestic harmony that many crave but so few deliver. If this is country, it’s happy; if it’s rock, it’s harmonious. It’s just music, and it’s cool. Special Guest: Mary O'Harrison myspace.com/maryoharrison

Musical Style: Acoustic/Rock
Time: 8.00pm
Cost: €12

Reviews: 'Strutting cockiness, as well as whispers of long, dark songwriting nights, Scanlan co stretch their canvas wide.' - Siobhan Long, The Irish Times. 'This cool as folk debut from Emmet Scanlan & WTGT is a tight, impressive, fully formed affair' - Olaf Tyransen, Hotpress.
About The Event: Formed in Galway in 2004, the musicians that became 'What the Good Thought' are not the stuff of your 'typical' contemporary act. Hailing from all over Europe, and with huge diversity in instrument choice, they create curious and evocative soundscape for Scanlan's expressive vocals. Voted one of Ireland's top 50 bands, Emmet & Co. provided the delicately crafted soundtrack to the Irish film 'Without Words'. The film has received over 388,000 views on YouTube and won Best Film at The Babelgum Film Festival, selected by esteemed director Spike Lee. In February, the band subsequently went on to make a video for their single 'Under the Weather' with the films' director, Brian Deane. In the last few years, Emmet Scanlan & WTGT have performed on some of Irelands greatest stages, such as the Olympia Theatre and the Electric Picnic, and have toured with a host of diverse acts, including The Saw Doctors and Femi Kuti. They have also toured the UK and America on a number of occasions. 2009 has been their busiest to date. They were one of a handful of Irish acts chosen to perform at the International Folk Alliance Festival, Memphis, Tennessee in February, being hailed as a 'delicious blend of various styles of contemporary music', a testimony of the unique blend of cello, percussion, classical guitar, bass and vocals. In March, the band released their debut offering, 'Hands'. It received rave reviews from both Hotpress and The Irish Times. 'Hands' was mixed by Mark Wallis, who has worked many well established acts, including U2, The Levelers, Travis and The Proclaimers. As the opening act this summer for the Volvo Ocean Race and doing special guest duties at the Galway Arts Festivals' 'Big Top', the band were given a great platform to work from. Since the release of 'Hands', they have been receiving consistent airplay and have toured solidly in venues dotted all over the country. The band are looking forward to a busy few months of gigs and hope to have new recordings early in the new year.
